The redevelopment of the Hunters Point shipyard in San Francisco aims to turn a once-thriving industrial area into a modern residential community. Originally built in the 1850s for naval activities, the shipyard has declined over the years, closing in the 1970s. The project focuses on revitalizing the space while blending living areas with nearby nature, creating a community that values both social interaction and the environment.

Design Concept

The design focuses on a multi-level structure where residential units co-exist with access to outdoor spaces. The first four levels include lookout zones that provide sweeping views of the bay and city. These areas allow residents to enjoy the surrounding greenery and water, encouraging a lifestyle that promotes relaxation and community interactions.

Modular Units

Units are designed as stacked crates that begin on Level 7 above the crane's legs. This configuration is complemented by a central core containing elevators and stairs, ensuring ease of movement throughout the building. Each unit can be adapted for different family sizes and needs, supporting potential expansions over time. This flexibility is a key feature, allowing residents to make the space their own.

Integration of Nature

Surrounding the residential units, open green spaces enhance the living environment. Grass, trees, and communal areas are incorporated into the design, promoting a strong connection to nature. This not only encourages outdoor activities but also helps create a welcoming community atmosphere, where people can gather and enjoy their surroundings.

Historical Context

Many elements of the site's industrial past are preserved through the design, including existing metal structures that remind residents of the area’s history. The architectural choices pay homage to this heritage while catering to contemporary living needs. By incorporating these historical features, the project creates a narrative that links the past with the present, grounding new developments in the roots of the shipyard.

The design showcases a thoughtful balance between modern residential needs and the site's historical significance. The crane remains a key element, connecting new developments with the storied past of the Hunters Point shipyard.
