The Amber Road Cabin is located along the Baltic Sea in Latvia and serves as a refuge for hikers exploring the natural landscape. The design is centered on the life cycle of amber, which shapes its form and function. This concept aims to create a strong connection between the building and the environment, providing necessary facilities while inviting users to engage with the surroundings.

Conceptual Framework

The cabin reflects the journey of amber, placing the experience within the broader geographical context of the area. By tracing the path along Amber Road, the design enriches the user’s understanding of the diverse landscapes and climates of the Latvian coastline. The cabin acts as a bridge between land and sea, enhancing the experience of exploration and deepening the connection with nature.

Architectural Form

The structure draws inspiration from traditional bird-watching towers, incorporating local building methods into a modern design. This choice enhances the cabin's integration with the landscape while ensuring it remains practical for visitors. The interior includes areas for sleeping, a fire pit for warmth and cooking, and storage for hiking gear, all within a straightforward and functional layout.

Material Considerations

Light timber is used for the cabin’s underlying structure, chosen for its strength and compatibility with insulation. This decision helps maintain a low profile while harmonizing with the natural surroundings. A reinforced concrete chassis offers stability, allowing the building to adapt to different locations on pad foundations.

Visual Connections

Amber-tinted windows are a key feature of the design, offering clear views of the night sky and acting as a guiding light for hikers. This detail enhances the user experience and emphasizes the cabin’s relationship with amber. Through its design, the cabin blurs the line between inside and outside, allowing visitors to fully engage with the beauty of the natural landscape surrounding them.
