Architecture competition Urban Zoo Coworking Design Challenge Honorable mention - Daniel Movila

Daniel Movilă from Romania

I am an architecture student interested in digital architecture and digital fabrication. This year I established my own start-up in the field of modular off-grid, sustainable housing. We are only a 4-person team, but this year we will appear at the München Green Concept Exhibition in March 2019. I am the editor SHARE Architects, the Architecture Conference Organizer from Central and Eastern Europe.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

We are undergoing a study at SHARE Architects, in which we asked over one hundred well-known architects about their opinion on the future of architecture. The common vibe was that architecture is in a constant state of change, both of its paradigm and definition. For me architecture is more about solving problems (ethics) than aesthetics. I believe the architect has a social role firstly, especially in a post-communist country like Romania, where the need for change is ubiquitous, yet few know how to make it. In this scenario architects have a big social role to play.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

There’s something about a deadline that makes you create things you wouldn’t normally start do. This type of work should be a constant in the work of architects, as they enhance their creativity and quick problem-solving.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

Don’t do it, it’s addictive like a drug! Once you start doing them you get caught up in wanting more and more. Which eventually isn’t such a bad thing. But at the end of the day, the most important things are the experience and the adrenaline before the submission deadline.
