We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce the 3rd prize winners of our Trans Siberian Pit Stops competition - Alessandro Carrea and Djavan Cardona from Switzerland!

3rd prize winners Alessandro Carrea and Djavan Cardona from Switzerland

We both graduated with a joint Masters of Architecture in Fribourg (Switzerland) in 2014. We are now independents architects and we collaborate to do competitions together. We work in a co-working space named Décal’Quai in Montreux (Switzerland).

Alessandro had the opportunity to work for international firms such as Johnston Marklee architects in Los Angeles (USA) and at HHF architects based in Basel (Switzerland).

Djavan had the possibility to make the design and to follow the construction progress for the renovation of a farmhouse in the Swiss Alps. Since he is independent, he participated in several competitions in Switzerland and he received two prizes; one for a new wine cellar in Wallis and another for a firehouse in Geneva.

Our first competition was an extension of a multifunctional hall in Conthey (Switzerland), with a direct view from the Alps and we received 5th prize for this competition. The Trans Siberian Pit Stop was our 2nd competition, and we are very proud to have won the 3nd prize as we were interested to work from a large scale to interior design.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

To us, architecture is a physical way to answer the needs of society. The architect should be aware of the actual problems of the society such as urban density, infrastructure, participation of the communities, and they should be able to integrate all those parameters into the design process.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

International competitions propose original and actual topics.

Participating in an architecture vision competition is a good exercise to develop new skills, design processes and learn of the problems around the world.
