TMGH Honorable mention from Hungary

Bianka Varga from Hungary

I finished my studies at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 2016, but I have been working as an architect for several years in various architecture studios. I had the chance to take part in many kinds of projects and to work at studios with different profiles. Now I am part of the team of Archikon Architects, which is one of the most significant architectural companies in Hungary. In addition, sometimes I spend my free time on architecture too, such as this competition.

During the years of university, I was mostly interested in historical architecture, within that, in the relation of historical and contemporary architecture. The subject of my final project was a restoration of an old watermill in a contemporary manner, this project is determining and special to me. Moreover, thanks to this project, I can work in my current workplace, where I usually participate in restorations of historical buildings. I mostly work on larger scale projects where the common point is the outstanding and demanding architectural standard.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is the perfect blend of creativity and rationality for me, and it doesn't work perfectly without one. On the other hand, in my society, architecture is just purely a tool for investments or political strategies most of the time and this will also appear in the final results of the projects and in the architecture of this era. However, in spite of the pressure of the market, architects should be more responsible for their work, pushing back their individuality.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

Most of the time I work on real projects, for this type of competition can be really refreshing for the mind. I like to participate in architectural competitions from time to time, especially when an exciting subject comes up. The freedom of creativity are given, the ideas can be fully realized.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

Anyone can benefit from a competition because of ameliorating professional experience. You can also develop your skills during the project those you may not be able to use in your everyday work. You are free to experiment and do it just for the pleasure of the work.
