Willem van Bolderen, M.Sc., is a founding partner of Helsinki-based Studio Puisto Architects Ltd. After his studies at Delft University of Technology, he finalized his Master in Architecture at the Aalto University of Technology with distinction. Willem worked for some of the leading Architecture offices in Finland before founding Studio Puisto. Since 2015 Willem has been teaching at Aalto University of Technology. Studio Puisto was founded in 2014 and selected as a rising star office by lifestyle magazine Wallpaper in 2016. Studio Puisto has received multiple design awards for its hospitality projects. In projects by Studio Puisto, ecological, economical and social ambitions come together – without compromising on a beautiful and functional end result.
Pip Cheshire is the Director of Cheshire Architects, based in Auckland, New Zealand. His career includes an Adjunct Professorship at the University of Auckland, competition and awards judging, institutional, residential and civic architecture. Pip is the recipient of the NZIA Gold Medal for Architecture, NZIA national awards for architecture, is a University of Auckland Distinguished Alumni and a published author and critic.
Jakob Gate is co-founder of both architectural studio Native Narrative and mobile sauna company Scandinavian Sauna. On a non-profit basis, Native Narrative has designed and built a number of Learning Centers for Children in rural villages in the Philippines. Prior to co-founding Native Narrative Jakob was educated in London and worked for leading design studios in the U.K, China and Indonesia on projects ranging in scale from furniture to urban planning. Jakob has worked with Heatherwick Studio, Softroom and Foster & Partners. Native Narrative is based in Copenhagen, Denmark and is currently focused on small-scale projects in Europe and Asia.
Kai Gu is Associate Professor at the School of Architecture and Planning, University of Auckland. His field-based research mainly focuses on urban morphology, urban design and urban landscape management. He served as Secretary-General of the International Seminar on Urban Form (ISUF) between 2010 and 2018.
Catherine Macdonald is an artist based in Whanganui, New Zealand. She is a graduate of the Quay School of Arts Whanganui majoring in printmaking, her practice includes printmaking, bookbinding, drawing, writing and furniture design. She has partaken in Residencies at Pompallier in Russell, The Art Vault, Mildura, Australia and at the Caselburg Trust Dunedin. In 2010 she was the Open Award winner, in the Whanganui Arts Review, Sarjeant Gallery, with the work A Place Where Things Really Happen and in 2020 her work Just a Moment, won the Article & Money Poppins Excellence Award in the Whanganui Arts Review. She has had articles published in Imprint, The Journal of the Print Council of Australia and Printmaking Today, UK. She was a founding Trustee of the Whanganui Artists Open Studios Event, and a committee member of the Whanganui Literary Festival. She exhibits throughout New Zealand and her work is held in the public collections of the Sarjeant Gallery in New Zealand, State Library of Victoria and the Print Council of Australia and private collections in New Zealand, Australia and Europe. She works part-time as a Design Technician at Dalgleish Architects LTD, Whanganui.
Dr Ferdinand Oswald (Dr. Dipl. Ing. Arch.) is an architect, researcher and course coordinator of Design Technology courses at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland. He holds a master degree in Architecture and a PhD in Architecture Engineering Science. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, he studied architecture at Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura in Granada (Spain), Agency of Urban Planning in Bern (Switzerland) and graduated at Technical University Dresden (Germany). In 2007 he realized the first German apartment block in “Passive House Standard” as project head architect with Stefan Forster Architects in Frankfurt am Main (Germany). His research and teaching has a specific focus on sustainable and energy efficient facade and building technologies. He has won several research prizes including the “European Recycling Award 2015” and “Innovation prize Architecture and Building” at BAU Munich, and has been granted several European patents.
Jordi Riembau Ribot is a co-founder of Nordest architecture SLP. He received his degree in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 2003. After collaborating in various architecture studios in the city of Barcelona, he founded, in 2004, together with Anna López, the TAB_arquitectes studio. In 2011 he created his own studio; This Is Estudi d’Arquitectura, in which he developed projects in the Girona region, mainly in the Baix Empordà area. At the beginning of 2016, together with Miquel Rusca, he formed the Society This IS Estudi d’Arquitectura SLP. In 2018 he founded, together with Miquel Rusca, Nordest architecture SLP.
Miguel Rusca Mestre is a co-founder of Nordest architecture SLP. He received his degree in architecture from l'Escola Politècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Girona in 2014. After collaborating in Domènec Rusca's family office for 6 years, in 2012 he collaborated with the architecture studio Hidalgo- Hartmann in Barcelona. In 2014 he collaborated with Jordi Riembau in This Is Estudi d’Arquitectura studio. At the beginning of 2016, he joined the Society This Is Estudi d’Arquitectura SLP. In 2018 he founded, together with Jordi Riembau, Nordest architecture SLP.
Michael Romanowicz is the Founder and CEO of Den Outdoors. Recognized for his work in architecture by Dwell Magazine, Dezeen, and Business Insider, Michael’s latest “day job” was with a subsidiary of WeWork. He has been involved in the real estate industry for over a decade and Den is his most recent foray into real estate through architecture and design.
Erik “Rick” Sommerfeld is an Architect, Assistant Professor and the Director of ColoradoBuildingWorkshop, the design-build program at the University of Colorado Denver. The program embraces small projects with tight budgets, short timelines and challenging site constraints to create innovative architectural solutions.
Caro Robertson co-founded Wellington, NZ-based Space Craft Architects in 2012 with Tim Gittos. After studying architecture for five years, Caro decided that building a house was necessary for her to be effective as an architect. Building a house has shaped her approach to the design of buildings. She likes to see buildings composed as part of their landscapes, from the necessary elements.
The Tiny Kiwi Meditation Cabin Competition is part of Buildner’ Small Scale Architecture Appreciation Movement showcasing small projects that contain big ideas. Designers are tasked with proposing an eco-friendly cabin located alongside the Hauraki Plains in New Zealand. The event is organized in collaboration with Earth Energies Sanctuary, and winning projects are to be considered for construction.
