Nicholas Devin Ryan

Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.

I received my Bachelor of Architecture from the Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design at the University of Arkansas in 2020. I’ve spent the last couple years of my professional career in Arizona as an Architectural Designer.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?

I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of project types that include commercial, mixeduse, multi-family and residential projects. In addition to a variety of project types, the scale has ranged from small, single-family residential projects up to a masterplan for a 250-acre mixed-use development.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

I believe architecture should look beyond its presence on a site; great design understands the impact a project will have on the transformation of its community for years to come. An idea can represent more than just a building and its program; it can focus on an innovative strategy that redefines the way design is seen architecturally, environmentally and socially. Design has the opportunity to embrace new methods of sustainability to not only benefit a community and its environment, but inspire others with a powerful precedent to incorporate the same design strategies into their own work. Architects and designers carry the responsibility of shaping our ever-evolving communities by intertwining the layers of past, present and future. By understanding the important lessons from our past and embracing innovative design practices, technologies and strategies, we have the opportunity to set the standard for the future of our communities.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

I participate in architecture competitions to showcase my design skills and challenge myself with project types I wouldn’t typically see in my day-to-day work. With unconventional programs and unique competition sites that encourage designers to embrace complete creative control, I can explore innovative design ideas and systems that have the potential to transform a project and its community.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

If you have the financial ability, I would strongly encourage individuals to participate in architecture competitions. While these competitions will challenge you to research, develop and present your design proposal, you will also have the chance to learn about the culture and environment of the communities where these competitions take place.
