Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.

studio formagora is a social design studio based in Münster, Germany, founded in 2022. Our team consists of four designers, all of whom have backgrounds as trained carpenters followed by design studies. This combination of craftsmanship and academic design knowledge allows us to bridge the gap between concept and construction, ensuring that our ideas are both innovative and practical. We focus on shaping public spaces, always viewing design as a political act that influences how people interact with their environment. Our approach is deeply participatory: rather than designing in isolation, we work closely with communities, municipalities, and organizations to develop solutions that truly meet their needs. By involving users in the design and implementation process, we foster a sense of ownership, empowerment, and long-term engagement with the spaces we create.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?

We collaborate with municipal partners, schools, and non-profit organizations, working on projects of various scales. A key aspect of our approach is sustainability, which is why we partner with a local waste management facility to source reclaimed materials for our designs. Our most significant project to date has been the creation of a "neighborhood living room," a participatory space designed to foster community interaction. As part of a larger socio-cultural center, this space was intended to be an open and welcoming meeting place for people from diverse backgrounds. The project included custom furniture designs, which were brought to life through low-barrier furniture-making workshops. A significant portion of the materials used came from reclaimed sources, aligning with the ecological values of our clients. One of the key furniture pieces developed within this project was the showcased Bäuer:innenstuhl. By emphasizing sustainable materials and community participation, we ensured that the space was not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also reflective of the collective vision of those who would use it.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture in public space carries a fundamental responsibility: to create environments that foster human connection. Well-designed spaces can encourage interaction, collaboration, and inclusivity, making communities stronger and more resilient. At studio formagora, we see architecture not just as a physical discipline but as a social tool—one that shapes how people experience their surroundings and each other. We believe that good public architecture serves the common good and should benefit all people, regardless of their background, social status, or financial means. In the context of the socio-ecological transformation, we place a strong emphasis on environmentally conscious design and resource-efficient construction methods. Our work prioritizes real human needs over superficial aesthetics, ensuring that spaces serve their intended purpose while remaining adaptable for future use. By integrating participatory processes and sustainable materials, we strive to make architecture more democratic, accessible, and responsible.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
