Julian Michael F Gamper
Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.
My name is Julian Gamper, founder of Gamper Design, an independent product design studio based in Belgium. My approach is driven by a deep understanding of both the environment and the human experience, with a focus on creating ecosystems where products hold authentic and meaningful purpose.
Before diving into the design process, I dedicate significant time to thoroughly understanding the people I collaborate with, as well as the market, to uncover the right niche for each product. This allows me to design products that are seemingly simple yet highly functional, addressing real needs for today and tomorrow. Each product makes its statement through its core essence rather than through excessive design elements.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a diverse array of projects across industries and regions worldwide, ranging from furniture to urban mobility and performance footwear. This broad experience fuels my creativity, continuously sparking new ideas and inspiring future projects. I place great value on the relationships I build with collaborators, striving to foster a strong network of people and expertise. This approach enables me to deliver results that stay true to the sensibility of the design vision I am passionate about bringing to life.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
Architecture, to me, is the framework of our existence as human beings on this planet. It shapes how we interact with our surroundings, reflects who we are, and influences what we create and leave behind. Every aspect of our lives—from the spaces we inhabit to the legacy we build—is intrinsically tied to architecture.
I believe the role of an architect, especially today, is to honor the structures and traditions of the past while envisioning and designing for a future that prioritizes both human well-being and environmental sustainability. Architects have the responsibility to balance heritage with innovation, creating spaces that not only serve the present but also positively impact generations to come.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
I participate in design competitions to ignite my creativity through new briefs and energize my work with fresh challenges. These opportunities push me to broaden my perspective, expand my sources of inspiration, and continuously drive innovation in my work.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
Think of it as the perfect excuse to share your ideas and personality. It's a chance to bring those private sketches out of the closet, push them further and show them to the world.
