We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the Honourable mention winner for our “SKYHIVE 2020 Skyscraper Challenge” competition - Alejandra Rojas from the United States.

Alejandra Rojas from the United States

I have a master’s degree in Architecture and Urbanism from the Architectural Association. Upon graduation, I moved to NYC where I worked at different architecture studios and started teaching at NYIT and CCNY. About a year ago, I founded By Alejandra Design.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where company/ individuals have been involved?

By Alejandra Design currently focuses on creating intricate design products for both home décor and wearable art. The products are designed using computational algorithms and printed in-house with our 3D printer. The final pieces are made using slip casting technique.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is the challenge of assembling a 3D puzzle with many variables. I believe the role of the architect is to innovate and bring new ideas to the table to create better environments for people to inhabit and experience.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

I participate in architecture vision competitions to synthesize new ideas and push the boundaries of architecture. It is a great opportunity to enhance my computational and graphic skills.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

In my experience, having a deadline helps to shape ideas into projects. Make the competition about learning and exploring something new regardless of the result and you will always gain experience.
