Studioarte was founded in 2002 by Arnold Aarssen, João Carriço and Joana Pinto, and currently has 10 collaborators. It is based in Portimão – in the south region of Portugal, Algarve.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

Studioarte develops projects of all types from small to large scale. To date, we have developed projects of rehabilitation, housing, houses, hospitality. The main ones recently realized and in development are: Atrium Lagoa, Casa Salicos, Casa Arrifana.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

At StudioArte we practice architecture as an imagination exercise to exceed the expectations and translate the dream lifestyle in a space that allows to live it fully and uncompromisingly. For us, architecture serves life first, since it enables the betterment of human lifestyle and interaction. We draw inspiration from the beautiful country we live in, from the stories its buildings tell, and from the canvas its nature provides.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

We see time spent on competitions as freedom where our creativity can express itself with no limitations. At the same time, it is an opportunity to break the daily routine and think about new architectural concepts and strategies.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide Whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

Participating in architecture competitions is always worth it because the challenge mode pushes you to do your best and develop concepts that in other situations would not see the light of day. Moreover, it is a really good training moment where you are thrilled to learn new skills.
