We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the 1st prize winners of our "Romantic Cabin For Two" competition – Maria Lucia Arce, Lucas Cardona and Gonzalo Camargo from Uruguay!

1st prize winners from Uruguay

We are three young architects from Uruguay, recently graduated in 2021 from the public university, Universidad de la Republica in Montevideo. We met during our first year of school and have been fortunate enough to remain close friends throughout. As of today, we each work independently as architects and designers for two local studios.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

Individually, we have been lucky to have participated in a variety of projects involving a wide range of scales, from social housing to public space.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

In our public university there is a strong tradition (75 years and running) of a housing competition, sponsored by the students every year, which has stuck and carried over with us. To us, competitions offer the challenge and opportunity to break free of academic and/or commercial restrictions which we may encounter day to day.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

You will undoubtedly learn something new, even if you are not fortunate enough to “win”. In our opinion, it is always beneficial to confront new challenges, find solutions to those problems, and contrast those with other people’s resolve.
