I completed my undergrad studies at the University of the Free State in South Africa. After a sabbatical last year for life and work experience, I continued with my Honours in Architecture at the same institution.

Recently, at university as well as at work, I’ve been primarily involved with large scale projects. At university the majority of our projects are multifunctional projects and while working I was involved with large residential projects. I much prefer smaller projects; one of the reasons why this competition was so refreshing.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is about creating meaningful experiences that reconnect us to our essential nature as human beings. We have a key role in shaping what our future could look like and it is our responsibility to society and the environment to ensure that we move forward in the most sustainable way.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

Competitions are a way to push my ideas and abilities beyond what I would in practice. They are driven by concepts and vision, providing the freedom to experiment. They are refreshing, motivating and remind me why I started studying architecture.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

There is not much you can lose and so much to gain. Through the creative and intellectual freedom it offers, one is able to realise one’s potential. You can’t put a monetary value on that.
