We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the Client Favorite Award winner of our "Portugal Olive Guest House" competition – Chuanyu Dai from China!

Chuanyu Dai from China

I am an architectural designer based in Beijing, and I hold a Bachelor's degree in game design. I completed my Master of Architecture degree at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, United States.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

I don't have a specific preferred architecture type. As I am at the beginning stage of my architecture career, I am open to all kinds of functions and scales of design.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Under recent circumstances in China, architecture may not be considered a popular choice of profession. However, I strongly believe that well-designed spaces are still essential in improving our quality of life.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

Competitions provide me with opportunities to practice my skills and can also help me find potential opportunities to enhance my career. Sometimes, competitions offer unique and attractive programs that I have never experienced before, such as the Olive Guest House competition. Prior to this competition, I was not aware of the existence of olive tasting rooms, which gave me a reason to explore new ideas and expand my horizons.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

Life is short, so don't waste time hesitating. If you have a passion for design, give it your all and submit your work. You will reap the rewards of your efforts.
