We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of our Honorable mention winner for our "Portugal Olive Guest House" competition – Evgenia Dubova from Italy!

Evgenia Dubova from Italy

After graduating from Politecnico di Milano, I had the opportunity to collaborate with several architecture firms in Italy and Europe. During my time at these firms, I gained valuable experience in designing projects of various scales and actively participated in different stages of project development. Currently, my focus has shifted towards pursuing my own projects and participating in architecture competitions.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?

Throughout my academic journey, I undertook a range of projects encompassing urban design and large-scale architecture. These experiences provided me with a broader understanding of architecture as a cohesive system. Subsequently, I collaborated with different architecture bureaus, primarily focusing on smaller-scale projects such as private housing and store design. It was during these experiences that I explored interior and furniture design, recognizing the significant role that attention to detail plays in the success of a project.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

To me, architecture is the art of shaping spaces and creating environments that inspire and serve people. It goes beyond just constructing buildings; it's about designing spaces that connect with our emotions, enhance our experiences, and improve our lives. Architects play a vital role in shaping the world around us. They blend creativity and technical expertise to address societal needs, considering cultural, environmental, and economic factors. They envision and shape our cities, homes, and public spaces, creating harmonious and efficient designs that enhance quality of life. Through their innovative problem-solving, architects contribute to the built environment, making a lasting impact on how we live, work, and interact with our surroundings.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

As an architect, I participate in architecture competitions primarily to challenge myself creatively and intellectually. Competitions provide a unique opportunity to explore innovative ideas, push the boundaries of design, and break away from the constraints of traditional projects. They allow me to unleash my creativity, experiment with unconventional approaches, and explore new design concepts that can inspire and influence my future work.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

Engaging in architectural competitions fosters creativity, pushing you to explore new design ideas and think outside the box. It enhances your skills and expertise, while offering exposure and industry recognition. You can gain valuable feedback, make connections, and open doors to future opportunities. It's not just about winning; it's a journey of self-discovery, expressing your unique vision, and finding satisfaction in creating something meaningful.
