We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the Student Award winner of our "Norman Foster Foundation Kharkiv Freedom Square Revival" competition – Qiqi Wu from United Kingdom!
Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.
I am currently a final-year landscape architecture student at the University of Sheffield, preparing to graduate. Throughout my academic journey, I have cultivated a strong foundation in design principles, environmental sustainability, and technical profic iency, all essential for excelling in this field. I am actively seeking an internship that aligns with my career aspirations. If any companies are interested, I would be delighted to connect and explore potential opportunities.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?
One of my most notable achievements is the Freedom Square project in Kharkiv, my first independently completed large-scale design. This project represented a pivotal moment in my academic career, transitioning from conceptual, small-scale university assignments to real-world, integrative design challenges. It required synthesizing the theoretical knowledge and practical skills I had accumulated, making it both demanding and rewarding. I am proud that this project received recognition from the project team and look forward to leveraging the insights gained to develop even more impactful designs in the future.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
To me, the core of landscape and architecture design lies in harmonizing physical functionality with emotional resonance. A successful design not only addresses the practical and physical needs of its users but also enriches their emotional and spiritual experience. Thoughtfully designed landscapes and architecture can elevate daily life, create cherished memories, and inspire a deeper connection with the natural world. My goal as a designer is to create spaces that seamlessly merge these aspects, leaving a lasting, positive impression on both individuals and communities.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
Design competitions provide a unique opportunity to unleash creativity and innovation without the constraints of real-world project limitations. They offer a platform to explore uncharted ideas and push the boundaries of design thinking. Observing the incredible creativity showcased in these competitions has always inspired me, motivating me to participate and contribute even a small spark of inspiration to others. Additionally, competitions enrich my portfolio, provide invaluable learning experiences, and allow me to connect with peers and professionals, fostering relationships that support my future career.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
If you are on the fence about entering a design competition, my advice is to approach it as a chance to grow and learn rather than solely focusing on the outcome. Competitions offer a rare opportunity to delve into innovative concepts and expand your creative horizons. As a student, I highly recommend fellow learners give it a try. You will gain experiences and perspectives that go beyond the confines of academic projects, enhancing both your skills and confidence in the process.
