We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of our Honorable mention winner for our "MICROHOME #6" competition – Emmanuel Batchily from France!
Emmanuel Batchily from France
I graduated in 2023 from the Toulouse School of Architecture (ENSA Toulouse - France), and I previously studied in Guinea, in West Africa. I am currently working in an architectural firm in Toulouse. My long-term goal is to have my own company based in France or abroad.
Having a dual culture, both Guinean and French, I devoted my curriculum to hybridization at different scales. Especially on those between vernacular building materials and contemporary architecture.
Today, as a young architect of the 21st century, I believe that it is necessary to conceive differently. Specially to meet the climate, demographic and economic challenges we are facing.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?
For me, it is important to make an architecture on a human scale, whatever the size of the project, it is all the same. Light, materiality, proportions, it is about a rhythm in space. What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in OUR society ? For me architecture is common sense, putting the user at the center of the spatial and urban reflexion while avoiding complexity. It is to seize the ordinary in order to make it something extraordinary.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
I decided to participate in an architectural competition because as a young architect, it is an opportunity to confront my point of view with real life. It was also an opportunity for me to concretize a process and a methodology. For me, the culture of experience is what makes an architect, and these competitions are good ways to confront the concrete.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
Do it.
