We are students at Clemson University’s Master of Architecture program in the United States and are set to graduate in May of 2022.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?
Our primary focuses involve exploring solutions to the American housing crisis, as well as the impact of the climate crisis on vulnerable communities. Our academic and professional work has focused on contemporary construction assemblies and how design can be used to create more equitable and sustainable communities.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
For us, architecture is about learning how to critically analyze complex problems in order to deliver simple and effective solutions. Architects must be conscious of issues that affect every level of the population and incorporate creative strategies to create a better quality of life.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
We participate in architecture competitions to consider how design can resolve social issues the world over. We participate in architecture competitions to exercise a creative freedom through which we can gain a better understanding of contemporary issues that the profession must deal with.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
We would advise individuals to find projects that feature a premise they are passionate about and explore avenues within their projects that allow them to develop those passions further. At the end of the day, it’s less about creating a winning project and more about creating a project that they are proud of.
