We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of our Honorable mention winners for our “Kurgi Observation Tower” competition – Leonardo Rossi from Italy!
Leonardo Rossi from Italy
I graduated from the School of Architecture of Florence (Italy) in 2019. After almost one year spent collaborating with various offices in Florence, I moved to the Netherlands in search of new challenges and eager to experience different approaches. Currently I am working for an architectural practice based in Amsterdam.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/individuals have been involved?
I had the opportunity to work on both renovation projects and design of new buildings in Italy and in the Netherlands. At the moment, I am working on the refurbishment of a large scholastic complex.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
One of the aspects I am more interested in about the architectural practice is the relationship between architecture and the environment that surrounds it. I believe that the act of interfering with an existing context, that the architect is called upon to do, represents a great responsibility. Architects have the opportunity to both enrich and to irredeemably compromise the environment.
Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?
I participated in competitions both with design teams and by myself, and I believe that in both cases I had the opportunity to grow. When you work in a team, ideas originate from the union of different sensibilities and you learn from the confrontation with other members of the group, whereas working alone you have the chance to look inside yourself and to understand what really interests you.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?
I believe that architecture is a never-ending research, and competitions are an amazing opportunity to expand horizons.
