Yanjun Xu and Jingyi Jiang
Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.
We are architecture students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Our academic journey has been focused on understanding the intersections of design, functionality, and human experience in architectural spaces. Through our studies, we have gained knowledge in various design techniques and software, with a particular interest in how architecture can cater to the needs of different user groups, such as children in this “Kinderspace” competition. This is our first participation in an architectural competition, and we are excited to apply our skills to this project.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?
We have been involved in architectural projects that primarily focus on small to medium-scale designs, allowing for meticulous detailing and greater control over spatial quality. Our academic work has explored themes such as human-centered design, sustainable architecture, and environmental integration. Notably, we have conducted research on high-rise building forms and their impact on pedestrian wind environments, as well as the therapeutic benefits of green walls in healthcare settings. Our current project for the "Kinderspace" competition continues this focus on user-oriented design.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
To us, architecture represents endless possibilities. It is not just about creating spaces but about shaping experiences, fostering connections, and improving lives. Despite the challenges facing the architecture industry in China, where it is often seen as declining, we remain committed to its transformative potential. We believe that through thoughtful and innovative design, architects can address societal issues, enhance urban environments, and create spaces that truly serve people. Our goal is to use architecture as a tool for positive change.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
We participate in architecture competitions as an opportunity to showcase our ideas and push the boundaries of creativity. These competitions provide a platform to experiment with innovative design concepts while addressing real-world challenges. At the same time, they offer a valuable learning experience, helping us refine our skills, enhance problem-solving abilities, and gain deeper insights into architectural thinking. It is both a chance for self-improvement and a way to contribute fresh perspectives to the field.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
We would encourage them to participate, as competitions provide a unique platform to explore ideas freely, gain hands-on experience, and refine design skills. Win or lose, the process fosters creativity, critical thinking, and professional growth, making it a valuable learning opportunity.
