Poorvi Gupta
Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.
I do not currently have a company. I am an Architectural Associate currently based in Massachusetts, USA. I hold a Master’s degree in Architecture and have 4 years of professional experience in the field, working on a range of institutional, educational, and competition-based projects. My work blends conceptual innovation with a strong understanding of construction and design detailing. I’ve also participated in several international design competitions and am currently pursuing an Executive MBA to further expand my leadership and project management skills within the AEC industry.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?
I have been involved in a variety of projects across different scales, primarily focusing on institutional, educational, and public architecture. Much of my professional experience centers around large-scale K–12 school projects in Massachusetts, particularly those funded by the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), where I’ve contributed to both design development and construction documentation phases. In addition, I’ve worked on competition entries including a National Sports University and institutional campuses like a Horticulture and Agriculture College in India. These projects emphasized sustainable planning, community engagement, and innovative spatial strategies. I enjoy working across scales—from urban interventions to conceptual proposals—where design can meaningfully impact the public realm.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
To me, architecture is a powerful tool to shape experiences, foster community, and respond to both environmental and cultural needs. It goes beyond just buildings—it's about creating spaces that uplift, connect, and endure. In society, I see the architect as a storyteller, problem-solver, and advocate for thoughtful, inclusive design. Architects hold the responsibility of not only envisioning structures but also influencing how people interact with their environments—whether it’s a classroom that inspires learning or a public space that brings people together. In my work, I strive to blend creativity with responsibility, ensuring that every design has a positive and lasting impact.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
I participate in architecture competitions because they offer a unique platform to explore bold, imaginative ideas without the usual constraints of client-driven projects. They allow me to challenge myself creatively, experiment with new design approaches, and address global issues through architecture. Competitions also foster growth by exposing me to diverse briefs and pushing me to think critically under tight deadlines. They’re a great way to stay inspired, build a strong portfolio, and engage with the global design community while contributing meaningful ideas to the built environment.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
My advice would be: just start. Architecture competitions are more than just winning—they're about learning, growing, and discovering your unique design voice. If you’re struggling to decide, view it as an opportunity to challenge yourself creatively without the usual constraints of practice or academia. Competitions help you build confidence, improve time management, and develop a portfolio that reflects your personal values and vision. Even if you don’t place, the process itself sharpens your skills, strengthens your critical thinking, and can open unexpected doors. The key is to enjoy the journey and see it as a space to experiment, fail, and evolve.
