Kateryna Shumikhina and Zlata Rybchenko from United Kingdom
Founded in 2016 by two architects, Zlata Rybchenko & Kate Shumikhina, Desirum is a design studio and creative consultancy based in London, which uses CGI technology to develop each step of the design process. The founders and almost all members of our team are initially from Ukraine. Specializing in 3D- visualization of commercial project spaces, we work in areas such as architecture and interior design, architectural concepts, and web-design. Our company has several departments, and every department is responsible for a specific field. Besides Desirum, we also have a division called Ohra which focuses on private interior design projects; Spacefeeling which deals with the development of co- working spaces; and Perspectik – object visualization.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?
We have projects all over the world – in Canada, Kinshasa (Kongo), and Europe. We have visualized oceanfront villas in Portugal, created the interior design of a co-working space in Paris, and designed private apartments in London. The range of our services is varied, but one thing is always common: achieving the best result for the client.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
For us, architecture means an aesthetic and functional form of space organization. The architect is a magician who has the superpower to see the future ahead, but at the same time is a very responsible and practical person who is capable of implementing all his dreams into real, functional, and stunning spaces.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
Architecture competitions are a great opportunity to train our creativity, make a statement, and present original ideas. However, it is also an opportunity to go beyond the boundaries, a great way to pump up the level of our skills and expertise, to realize the flight of our imagination. At Desirum, we pay a lot of attention to the professional development of our team, so we regularly participate in architectural competitions.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
It’s all about thinking outside the box, training your skills, developing creativity – all that is worth trying. So, our advice – try and participate, because with each new competition you can get a unique experience which will be useful in your future professional activities.
