The Place for Witches is located in a forest in southwestern Germany, an area marked by a history of witch trials in the 15th and 16th centuries. It serves as a memorial for those persecuted and as a space for reflection and contemplation. The design invites visitors to explore themes of history and self-discovery through a landscape that weaves together nature and narrative.

Memorial Structure

The entrance includes a memorial structure that features reflective surfaces. This design approach allows the building to engage with the surrounding forest, creating a bond between the site and its history. By reflecting the landscape, the memorial honors the memory of those accused of witchcraft while blending into the natural environment around it. This interaction encourages visitors to consider the relationship between the past and the present.

Garden Maze

After passing through the memorial, visitors encounter an expansive garden maze. The maze represents the complexity of choice and the weight of knowledge. As people navigate its winding paths, they encounter hedges containing both edible and poisonous plants. This design choice symbolizes the dual nature of existence and the challenging decisions faced by individuals throughout history. The maze not only provides a physical challenge but also offers a moment for introspection about the narratives that shaped this period.

The Crystal Sphere

At the center of the maze lies The Crystal Sphere, an important feature that promotes personal growth. The sphere’s base, made of square stone, includes a library and herbarium, creating a space for learning. Visitors ascend through a spiraling ramp, surrounded by water that occupies half of the sphere’s interior. Within this space, glass circles represent celestial bodies, inviting contemplation of one’s connection to the universe.

Spatial Perspective

The ascent culminates as visitors rise above the water surface, providing a new view of the surrounding landscape. This upward journey allows individuals to reconsider their relationship with the Earth and the cosmos. Light reflecting within the sphere creates a peaceful atmosphere, supporting themes of empowerment and individual transformation. As people interact with the space, they connect their personal journey to the larger narratives of history and nature.

The materials used, particularly the square stone of The Crystal Sphere’s base, resonate with the natural surroundings. This choice reinforces the project's exploration of transformation and the deep relationship between people and the environment.
