Geometric Forms of Cast-In-Place Concrete Integrated with Local Larch in Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

Constructed from cast-in-place concrete and local larch, the design's geometric forms create an engaging dialogue with the Icelandic landscape while serving as a multifunctional community space.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with locally sourced larch wood, enhancing sustainability and regional connection.
02
Geometric forms designed to mimic natural landscapes, fostering user engagement.
03
Utilizes passive design strategies for energy efficiency in a harsh climate.
04
Integrated large windows to maximize natural light and landscape views.
05
Cubic layout promotes fluid connectivity between different functional areas.
"Somethings Fall" is an architectural project situated in Vogar Farmland, Iceland. The design comprises three distinct cubic structures that serve multiple communal functions, such as a café/gallery, a theatre, and restroom facilities. The project concept is inspired by the idea of geometric forms that mirror environmental forces, specifically gravity. By integrating the natural landscape with these abstract shapes, the design fosters interactions between users and their surroundings.

The project showcases a commitment to sustainable architecture and local material use, predominantly employing cast-in-place concrete. This material choice enhances durability while reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Additional materials include local aggregates and larch wood, utilized to integrate aesthetic and functional requirements. The architecture strategically positions large windows to maximize views of the Icelandic landscape, creating a visual connection with the environment.

Unique Design Approaches

The architectural approach of "Somethings Fall" emphasizes a non-linear geometric form, differentiating it from conventional designs. The tilted angles and asymmetry of the cubic structures challenge traditional architectural norms, encouraging exploration and engagement. This configuration not only contributes to visual interest but also creates various internal spatial experiences susceptible to natural light and varying perspectives.

The layout promotes communal interaction through a central gathering space, connecting the individual structures while preserving existing topographic features. Landscape integration is a core aspect of the design, with careful consideration given to the natural contours of the site. By maintaining sightlines and emphasizing site preservation, the project effectively harmonizes the built environment with its natural context.

Spatial Functionality

The project is organized around three primary uses: the café/gallery serves as a social hub, providing an inviting space for art exhibitions; the theatre caters to cinematic and live performance needs with tiered seating for enhanced viewing; and the restroom facilities ensure practical amenities for visitors. Each distinct function is meticulously considered, promoting a fluid experience throughout the site.

In addition to the focus on functionality, the design incorporates passive heating and cooling strategies, aligning with sustainable practices. The insulated concrete layers further enhance energy efficiency, creating comfortable internal environments that respond to the Icelandic climate.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
