Floating Modular Units Featuring Bamboo Facades and Integrated Solar Systems

Project in-detail

Floating above water, these modular units utilize bamboo facades and solar panels to create adaptable living spaces that merge sustainability with functional design.
5 key facts about this project
01
Modular units are designed to float on water, reducing land impact.
02
Bamboo facades enhance sustainability while providing natural insulation.
03
Integrated solar panels support energy self-sufficiency for each unit.
04
Flexible interior zoning allows for multi-functional use of space.
05
Innovative water harvesting systems promote resource management.

The architectural design project, para(POD), represents a systematic approach to modular living spaces that emphasizes sustainability and adaptability. The design consists of modular units referred to as "PODs," which serve various functions including meditation, yoga, and workspace environments. This approach addresses the increasing demand for flexible living solutions while fostering a connection with the surrounding natural landscape.

The overall structure is based on modular components that provide versatility in configuration and usage. Each POD unit incorporates eco-friendly materials, allowing for reduced environmental impact and enhanced energy efficiency. The design is built with sustainable materials such as bamboo and engineered wood for the walls and finishes, coupled with large glass panels that facilitate natural lighting and visual openness. The use of steel reinforces the structural integrity, ensuring durability while maintaining an elegant aesthetic.

Sustainability is a core principle throughout the project. Solar panels enable energy self-sufficiency, and integrated water harvesting systems demonstrate a commitment to responsible resource management. Unique features include the floating capabilities of the PODs, which create opportunities for habitation on water, differentiating this project from traditional land-based housing solutions. This floating design not only conserves land use but also enhances the interaction with aquatic environments.

The adaptable nature of the PODs allows them to be reconfigured to meet the diverse needs of their users. Interior zoning is thoughtfully arranged to include dedicated areas for cooking, working, and relaxation, enhancing the habitability within compact dimensions. The versatile configurations exemplify the shift toward minimalism in modern architecture, promoting efficient spatial use without sacrificing comfort.

The para(POD) project demonstrates how architecture can respond to contemporary lifestyle demands through innovative design solutions. Interested readers are encouraged to explore the project presentation for an in-depth understanding of architectural plans, sections, designs, and ideas that underpin this modular living initiative.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
