The "Nemrut Volcano Eyes Expansion" project showcases a thoughtful engagement with the striking volcanic landscape of Nemrut. The design focuses on enhancing visitors' experiences as they connect with their surroundings. The concept revolves around the idea of opening one’s arms to embrace the vastness of the natural world. By integrating pathways and viewpoints, the design encourages exploration and reflection within this unique geological setting.

Design Concept

The design highlights the instinctive human gesture of reaching out to nature. Visitors traverse a carefully planned route that leads them to the summit of the mountain. This pathway is designed to respond to the landscape, allowing individuals to engage dynamically with their environment as they ascend. Each step along the path becomes an integral part of the journey, enhancing the connection between the built spaces and the surrounding topography.

Viewing Platforms

Strategically positioned viewing platforms punctuate the path, offering various perspectives of the volcano's features. These platforms are placed to frame the southern flank and crater, providing visitors with opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty of the site. By facilitating moments of pause and contemplation, the design deepens the visitor's relationship with the landscape. Each viewpoint serves as a reminder of the geological significance of the area while inviting personal reflection.

Materiality

Materials selected for the project are suited to the harsh climate typical of volcanic regions. Concrete forms the main structure, providing essential durability and stability. Corten steel is also utilized, chosen for its ability to withstand weathering while gradually blending into its environment. This careful selection of materials supports the project's objective of integrating with the landscape while ensuring long-lasting functionality.

At the highest point, a key viewing platform offers a clear view of the crater. It stands as a thoughtful culmination of the visitor's journey, inviting deep engagement with the surroundings and fostering a sense of place within the broader landscape.
