Buried Studios and Glulam Frameworks in Lakeside Family Living

Project in-detail

Set against a serene lakeside backdrop, the residence combines buried studios and glulam timber frameworks to create private yet accessible living spaces for two painters and their families.
5 key facts about this project
01
Buried studios enhance acoustic privacy and focus.
02
Glulam timber frameworks provide structural integrity and aesthetic warmth.
03
Large openings bring in abundant natural light while framing lake views.
04
Bedrooms feature narrow openings for selective views and intimacy.
05
The rotated square plan creates dynamic spatial experiences.

Located by a peaceful lake, "Almost Scenic" is a residence designed for two painters and their families. The project focuses on merging living spaces with the surrounding nature. It balances open exposure to the outdoors with the privacy needed for artistic work, creating an environment that supports both family life and creativity.

Design Concept

At the core of the design is a square plan that rotates away from traditional layouts. No walls face parallel to the shoreline, which allows occupants to experience a varied connection to the landscape. This orientation invites natural light into the building while offering different perspectives of the lake as one moves through the space.

Spatial Organization

The center of the home features a gathering area that encourages interaction among family members. Designed with large openings, this space brings in daylight and frames views of the lake, making the connection to the outside more pronounced. It links the entry porch, living room, and dining areas, allowing for easy movement between these different yet interrelated functions.

Materiality

The choice of materials supports both the design and functionality of the residence. Prefabricated aluminum panels give a modern touch to the exterior while ensuring durability. A self-adhered membrane provides weather protection, and glue laminated timber acts as the main structural element, adding strength to the overall build. Reused wood panels for the ceiling contribute an element of warmth and sustainability to the interior.

Private Retreats

The private studios, located on the lower level, are partially embedded in the ground. This arrangement offers a quieter space for the painters to work. Each bedroom sits at opposite ends of the upper floor, featuring narrow openings that limit wider views. This deliberate design encourages moments of solitude, making the spaces suitable for introspection and creativity.

The careful arrangement of light and space, along with thoughtful material choices, fosters a strong relationship with the surrounding lakeside environment. Each detail forgoes extravagance, focusing instead on a harmonious blend of living and working spaces that respect both the artists and their natural setting.
