Design a memorial that speaks to the cause of ending all nuclear weapons programs
We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the winner of one of our Honorable mentions for the “Silent Meditation Forest Cabins” competition - Joseph Watkins from United Kingdom!
Joseph Watkins from United Kingdom
I studied my undergraduate degree at the University of Dundee, here I developed a rigorous design process, pulling inspiration from personal interests and integrating them into my design process. When starting a project my aim is to create something fun and unique by expanding the brief to maximise the potential of the site. I have a deep interest in minimalist design and try and achieve a simplistic yet meaningful aesthetic. My draw to study architecture is to create beautiful spaces that have an impact and improve people’s lives. Following my graduation, I started my placement year and have since worked on a diverse range of projects.
Throughout my undergraduate studies and into my placement year, I have been working on mostly larger-scale projects, from spa hotels to large residential blocks. The more intimate scale of this competition has allowed me to fully explore the interior design and atmosphere of a space. I have thoroughly enjoyed this shift in scale and look forward to working on similar projects in the future.
I believe architecture should simple, beautiful and sustainable, whilst promoting physical and mental wellbeing. It should raise one’s spirits and focus on creating cohesive communities.
Participating in the competition has allowed me to pursue a brief which I was passionate about, this made the design process extremely rewarding as I was able to draw upon many areas of interest to formulate my design. The work produced in these competitions is a good way to explore new ideas in a public forum which may go on to inspire others in their own design work.
If you are passionate about the brief of a competition, I recommend giving it a go as it is a great opportunity to think outside the box and create something truly unique you can be proud of.
