Buildner is pleased to announce the results of the Rome Rain Rooms architecture competition, inviting architects and designers to imagine small, reversible pavilions that transform rainfall into a civic experience. Participants were challenged to create structures capable of collecting and storing at least 5 m³ of rainwater per storm, while providing shade, cooling, gathering spaces, and support for nearby vegetation.
The 1st Prize was awarded to Daniele Carlini from Italy for Pluvia, a circular pavilion that combines rainwater collection with a porous terracotta enclosure to create cooling, sound, humidity, and changing light.
2nd Prize went to Jun Ho Lee from the UK for Xylophone, which uses reclaimed Roman roof tiles to turn rainfall into a rhythmic architectural experience.
The 3rd Prize and Student Prize were awarded to Mennaalla Mohamed Mostafa Soliman, Rina Seida and Synnove Patricia Grao from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, for Channeling Amphorae. The Sustainability Award went to Lee Kwangmin, Sooyoung Shin and Jonghwa Hwang from South Korea for Romantic Dome, a planted pavilion combining rainwater collection, shade, seating, and community use.
The awarded proposals demonstrate how small architectural interventions can combine environmental performance, Roman heritage, and memorable public experiences.
