Nicholas Brown from the United States

Founded 2014 in Brooklyn NY, Forty Seventy-Three started as a collaboration with a colleague to explore projects and ideas outside of the daily office environment. We both came from a design-build background and had an appreciation for a hands-on approach to building. Currently the office is a solo operation with project-based collaborations between artisans and craftsmen.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/individuals have been involved?

The office focuses on residential and commercial projects throughout New York City, within a scale that allows for an intimate exploration of material, detail, and spatial experience.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

For me, the role of architecture is to promote a positive and engaged environment. Whether the scale of the project is large or small, architecture should cultivate an awareness and mindfulness to our surroundings, nature, and cultural context; creating opportunities for the enrichment of experience.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

Competitions allow me to explore broader architectural concepts beyond the limitations of the office routine. They help to rekindle the inspiration necessary to maintain healthy creativity.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

Competitions are a great opportunity to keep your mind fresh and open to new ideas for exploration.
