The fourth annual MICROHOME architecture competition, in collaboration with ARCHHIVE BOOKS, saw entries from around the world suggest small-scale solutions to the affordable housing crisis. Participants submitted designs for an off-grid modular structure that could house a young professional couple. Although limited to just 25 m², there was no limit to the imagination and innovation of the submitted projects.
Both the Sustainability Award and our first prize was awarded to Şeyma Çimen from Turkey, whose Nomad project proposed micro housing designed for seasonal agricultural workers in Turkey. Nomad uses plywood, pine, and polycarbonate to offer a two-unit customizable prototype that would replace the unsafe and unhygienic tents that are typically used on rural sites.
Second prize went to Antoine Chauvin Jean d'Ursel from France, whose Solar Glass House acts as a free space and uses a passive solar principle and the greenhouse effect to reduce energy needs. Third prize and our Student award went to Zhi Zheng from Syracuse University in the USA, whose Urban Shelter project was designed to be a compressible and easy-to-transport home for a city’s underutilized spaces.
