The Wave project is a thermal springs guest house located in Iceland. It focuses on integrating the building with its natural surroundings while providing comfort and a unique experience for visitors. Inspired by traditional Icelandic turf houses, the design features a series of flowing forms that echo the undulating landscape. This thoughtful approach aims to create a structure that complements the terrain while offering guests an immersive connection to the environment.

Design Concept

The design prioritizes a close relationship with the landscape, ensuring minimal disruption to the site. The wavy lines of the building not only contribute to its visual appeal but also play a functional role in defining spaces. Openings and enclosures are incorporated into the structure, allowing for interaction between indoor and outdoor areas. This connection enhances the overall experience, blending the guest house with the Icelandic scenery.

Orientation and Views

Guest accommodations are carefully oriented toward the north and equipped with large skylights and wide openings to the west. This arrangement allows for clear views of the aurora borealis and Lake Myvatn, ensuring that natural light illuminates the living spaces. The strategic layout encourages a strong link to the striking landscape outside, inviting occupants to enjoy the beauty of nature during their stay.

Common Spaces

The design includes a communal area that provides essential amenities such as a reception, luggage room, restroom, common living room, kitchen, and mezzanine. These spaces foster a sense of community among guests while allowing for personal privacy in the individual accommodation units. The common areas serve as gathering spots, encouraging interaction and enhancing the social atmosphere of the guest house.

Materials and Structure

Notable materials in the design include field grasses on the roof, which can grow between 70 mm to 150 mm in height and are paired with an expanded shale planting medium. The building also utilizes reinforced concrete, ensuring durability while allowing for the wave-like design to take shape. The chosen materials contribute to the overall sustainability of the project, enabling it to blend harmoniously with the Icelandic setting.

Large windows bring the outdoors into the living spaces, drawing attention to the stunning views that surround the guest house. This design detail emphasizes the building's relationship with nature, making visitors feel at home within the beautiful landscape.
