RH Carter Architects was founded by Ron Carter; a leading designer who began a small practice of dedicated architects and technologists in 1985 in West Toronto.

Current owner and President, Robert Arnone is celebrating 30 years in practice and has overseen significant growth in the firm. He defines the practice by its exceptional staff. “We promote a thriving and dynamic culture of design professionals who reflect the diversity and energy of North America’s 4th largest city. Our team of 40 staff speak 18 different languages. What unites us is our commitment to design excellence and assuring that our clients receive the highest level of customer service”

The firm is an industry leading brand design and implementation specialist. “We bring over three decades of specialized national and international retail design experience to our clients using state of the art architectural design software and customer experience information management systems. In addition to developing broad, cross-country design campaigns, we also specialize in individual, thoughtful and contextual design solutions for single-family residences and resort properties.”

The firm has competed in a number of interesting and varied national and international design competitions which include: Competition For Designers: Wine Mythology Label 2017, Design Your RYDE, Australia 2016, Evolo Skyscraper 2016, GM Innovation Centre Toronto 2017. As well, they organize and enjoy internal design competitions on a regular basis.

The firm collaborated with Apple Inc. and Gensler on the design and construction of their first Apple stores in Canada located throughout the Toronto area. Internationally, they have designed numerous facilities for Infiniti in South and Central America. They have worked with innovative design teams from The United States, Sweden and Japan on the re-design of branding initiatives and retail programs throughout Canada.

They are currently collaborating with Genesis Motors on the launch of their global design initiative; the prototype for which in Seoul, South Korea, was first conceived by OMA of Rotterdam.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

The firm believes that listening to the needs of clients and working through and ultimately distilling an exceptional design solution is the essence of the architectural process.

Equally as important, they believe that design needs to account for - and celebrate - the user experience; that the building acts as a backdrop for the experience and what transpires within and around the structure is equally as important as is how people interact within it.

Today the firm also specializes in assessing, rating and harvesting customer experience data. They develop and build web applications and databases to collect this information to allow clients to use it to improve their environments, strengthen their brand and create better customer experiences on a more consistent basis.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

The firm regularly participates in competitions to inspire their creative staff, foster collaboration, improve their design process, and celebrate their diversity and passion for design.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

Impossible is nothing.
