Buildner is pleased to announce the results of The Next House: USA, an international architecture competition challenging participants to reimagine the American suburban home through adaptable, sustainable, and affordable design. With a $20,000 USD prize fund, the competition sought innovative and replicable prototypes for a new generation of suburban living.
The awarded projects approached this challenge through different interpretations of the home, construction, and neighborhood. The First Prize was awarded to Shengnan Gao, Telmen Bayasgalan, and Penghui Zhang from the United States for Everyday House, which combines compact planning, prefabricated components, renewable energy, rainwater collection, and flexible interiors with a more socially connected neighborhood landscape. The Second Prize went to Diego Rodriguez from France for Another Kind of Suburb, proposing an adaptable steel structure and greenhouse-like envelope that allow the home to evolve over time, while replacing rigid property divisions with shared landscapes and pedestrian connections. The Third Prize was awarded to Chung Wei, Lee Yu Hsianga, and Lin Buzz Wei from the United States for Common Ground, which combines modular construction and adaptable layouts with shared gardens, play areas, and communal spaces to create a more collective suburban environment.
Beyond the top three prizes, the competition also recognized outstanding approaches to sustainability and student-led design. The Buildner Student Award was awarded to a project from Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, while the Buildner Sustainability Award went to MANY House from the United States. Several Honourable Mentions and shortlisted projects were also selected, highlighting a wide range of ideas for more adaptable, affordable, and connected suburban living.
