Buildner is pleased to announce the results of the 6th edition of the Nuclear Memorial competition, which invited architects and designers from around the world to envision a place of remembrance for the nuclear age. The competition explored how architecture can address invisible violence, environmental damage, and generational trauma through spatial, material, and atmospheric strategies. Submissions ranged from large-scale landscape interventions to minimal, contemplative gestures, with many projects engaging themes of time, memory, light, and ecological recovery.
The First Prize was awarded to Hamzeh Ahmad Hasan Al-Thweib (Jordan) for a project that reinterprets the form of the mushroom cloud as a series of soft, luminous volumes hovering above the landscape, transforming a symbol of destruction into an atmospheric space of reflection and regrowth. The Second Prize went to Andreea-Mihaela Nicolae, Tabark H. Felaih, Mara Ioana Constantin, and Alexandra-Stefana Fartais for a sunken memorial that contrasts a field of mirrored surface markers with a subterranean chamber shaped by shafts of daylight. The Third Prize was awarded to Frederic Gapinski (New Zealand) for a mirrored disc and oculus intervention that leads visitors into a subterranean space centered on a solitary tree, symbolizing resilience and renewal.
The jury praised the awarded projects for their restraint, clarity, and sensitivity to landscape and memory, highlighting architecture’s ability to bear witness through presence rather than spectacle. Student Awards, Honorable Mentions, and Shortlisted projects are available on the Buildner website.
