Buildner is pleased to announce the results of the fourth edition of its Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial competition. Participants were invited to design a memorial located on a decommissioned nuclear weapons testing site, with submissions required to communicate entirely through architecture, reflecting the global silence surrounding nuclear weapons.
The first prize was awarded to Juan Gonzalez Blanco from Spain, whose design features a crater transformed into a peaceful forest. Trees are arranged in concentric circles along the crater’s slopes, surrounding a central pool of clear water, creating a striking contrast with the barren, desert-like surroundings.
Second place and the student award were given to Salvador Colin Aguilar from Mexico for a light installation set within a bomb crater. The design includes thousands of spherical light fixtures embedded in the soil, creating a glowing, volcano-like effect at night.
Third prize went to Kongyun He and Michele Turrini from the United States for their design of a memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Inspired by the Vietnam Memorial, it cuts into the landscape, with shadows of visitors projected across the sloped surface, creating a haunting reflection of humanity.
