Buildner is pleased to announce the winners of the Hospice – Home for the Terminally Ill Edition #5 competition, an international challenge inviting architects and designers to reimagine hospice care as spaces of dignity, reflection, and emotional support. Participants were asked to propose day hospices that go beyond clinical models, creating environments that nurture mental and emotional well-being while integrating patients, families, and caregivers into the community.

First prize went to Maximilian Mehl (Netherlands) for The Silent Threshold, a hospice that bridges urban life and forested serenity through a brick threshold, water gardens, and timber structures. Second prize was awarded to Yilin Zhang and Yixuan Liu (USA) for Within Reach, a design connecting hospice care to everyday urban life through concentric spaces for patients, families, and the community. Third prize went to Cha Minyoung (South Korea) for Loose Bonds, Lasting Care, which emphasizes hospice as a supportive community ecosystem. Additional recognitions include the Student Award for Paulina Weronika Piekarz (Poland) and the Sustainability Award for Jeongseung Lee (UK).

The jury praised the projects for their thoughtful integration of landscape, materials, and spatial organization, showing how architecture can transform end-of-life care into humane, reflective, and socially connected experiences. Full results, honorable mentions, and shortlisted projects are available on the Buildner website.
