The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center competition was the second collaboration between Buildner architecture competitions and Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (EAD). Participants were tasked withdesigning a visitor center in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. The jurysought designs with both sustainability and constructability in mind, and the shortlisted entries were those that showed respect for the reserve’s fragile ecosystem.

The winning design was entitled ‘To See and Not To Be Seen’ by Petr Janda, Anna Podroužková and Kateřina Tšponová from the Czech Republic. Their remarkable design proposed a structure that behaves as part of a living habitat rather than a building, with program and circulation flows organized intelligently in intertwining loops that add meaning to the complexity of the overall form.

Second place winners were Wenqi Huang and Yi Yan from the USA for their ‘Incubator’ project, which imagines a rich interior universe sheltered by a delicate shell and an oculus that opens up to the site in a dramatic way. Third prize went to Laurent Herbiet and Giordana Rojas from Mexico, whose ‘Dune’ project incorporated design throughout the entire site in a series of dispersed pavilions unified under a single roof canopy witha central void.
