5 key facts about this project
01
A monolithic wall creates a distinct boundary between the retreat and the outside world.
02
Outdoor areas incorporate blue clay, enhancing the natural healing properties of the environment.
03
The design emphasizes intimate spaces that encourage personal reflection and well-being.
04
Corridors distort perceptions of time, influenced by varying light and volume.
05
The Guest House evokes nostalgia through familiar domestic elements and comfort.

The Sanctuary is located in the calm environment of Latvia and serves as a retreat designed to encourage quiet reflection and a strong connection to nature. The design emphasizes smooth interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a place that prioritizes personal well-being. Through simple shapes and thoughtful arrangements, the Sanctuary reflects a deep understanding of human experiences in a serene setting.

PRIMORDIAL CONCEPTS

The design is built on three main ideas: primitive forms, separation, and nature. The primitive aspect focuses on fundamental design principles that evoke a sense of familiarity and comfort. Each area within the Sanctuary invites users to engage with their surroundings in a way that fosters tranquility and introspection.

SEPARATION AS STRUCTURE

A prominent wall acts as a clear division between the Sanctuary and the outside world, providing both a physical and psychological barrier. This wall creates a refuge, allowing users to distance themselves from daily life and distractions. The design promotes a smooth transition into a space that is dedicated to personal reflection and renewal.

SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT

The layout of the Sanctuary encourages individual exploration through various defined areas. The corridors serve as paths that shift perceptions of time and space, while the rhythm of movement influences the experience. The Spa acts as a retreat with an inward focus, offering a nurturing environment. The Guest House is designed to evoke nostalgia, creating a comforting space that feels like home.

NATURAL INTEGRATION

The natural landscape of Latvia plays an essential role in the overall design. It is more than just a backdrop; nature acts as a key element that enriches the experience and contributes to well-being. Concrete is used for its lasting qualities, while blue clay is noted for its health benefits, highlighting the design's emphasis on sustainability and the restorative power of local resources.

At the center of the Sanctuary is an outdoor bath, connecting users directly to the natural environment and providing a personal space for contemplation amid the expansive landscape.
