Weathering Steel Integration in an Accessible Elevated Landscape Pathway

Project in-detail

Utilizing weathered steel panels and expanded metal mesh, the pathway seamlessly integrates with the natural terrain, promoting accessibility and enhancing the visitor experience while fostering a strong connection to the landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Weathered steel paneling enhances durability while blending visually with the environment.
02
Expanded metal mesh flooring provides structural support and visibility, encouraging environmental engagement.
03
The pathway's design incorporates multiple vantage points for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
04
Integrated solar-powered LED strips ensure nighttime safety while minimizing energy consumption.
05
Carefully planned resting areas offer visitors a space for contemplation and interaction with nature.

The project "The Path" is a carefully designed architectural intervention that integrates with the natural landscape, creating an accessible route for diverse users, including those with limited mobility. It is engineered to facilitate exploration of the environment while ensuring safety and comfort. This project emphasizes a harmonious relationship with the surrounding terrain, offering a variety of experiences along the path.

The design represents a fusion of functionality and aesthetics, prioritizing user engagement with the landscape. Architectural elements are strategically placed to provide panoramic views, rest areas, and multiple access points, making the path inviting for visitors. The overall form is influenced by the site’s topography, ensuring that the pathways—comprised of different sections—interact fluidly with the natural slopes and valleys.

Unique Design Approaches

The Path incorporates several distinctive architectural features that differentiate it from conventional landscape paths. Firstly, the use of expanded metal mesh in the flooring of the viewpoint not only allows for structural strength but also offers transparency, maintaining visual connections with the surroundings. This materiality decision ensures that users can appreciate the landscape without obstruction.

Additionally, the project employs Corten panels in the construction of bridges, providing a rustic aesthetic that complements the environment. The choice of weathering steel also enhances durability, reducing long-term maintenance needs. Safety is addressed through the implementation of wire mesh barriers that provide protection without detracting from scenic sightlines.

The architectural layout includes distinct areas designed for different types of engagement. The Crosspath merges seamlessly with existing trails, while The Split provides visitors with options for varying experiences. Key rest areas, referred to as The Steps, are integrated thoughtfully into the design, allowing for contemplation and enjoyment of the views. These elements collectively contribute to an immersive and interactive experience.

Sustainable design considerations are evident throughout The Path. Solar-powered LED strips provide necessary lighting, ensuring visibility at night while minimizing energy consumption. This ecological approach not only supports environmental stewardship but also enhances user safety.

For deeper insights into the architectural plans, sections, and overall design strategies employed in The Path, readers are encouraged to explore the detailed project presentation. The innovative architectural ideas demonstrated in this project serve as a resource for understanding modern design approaches that address accessibility and environmental integration.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
