5 key facts about this project
The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Observation Tower is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve. It is designed to serve visitors by offering a dedicated space for observing wildlife and interacting with the natural surroundings. Inspired by the graceful shape of flamingos, the design integrates natural forms into a structured environment that fits well within the diverse landscape of the wetlands.
Structural Design
The structure features slender elements that project an impression of lightness and elegance. Vertical and horizontal components mimic the soft lines of flamingos, creating an appealing entrance for visitors. This design choice highlights the relationship between the building and the natural world, encouraging exploration and connection with the environment.
Materiality
Cross-laminated timber is chosen for the floors, in line with modern sustainable practices. The use of this material enhances the tower's stability while keeping it light in appearance. To ensure longevity, the floors are finished with polyurethane, which protects against wear and weather conditions. This careful selection of materials demonstrates a commitment to both sustainability and durability.
Safety and Accessibility
Railings take inspiration from bird feathers, providing both safety and aesthetic value. Made from weathered steel, they enhance the visual character of the tower while ensuring user security. Additionally, a solar-powered wheelchair stair lift is included to improve accessibility for all visitors, allowing more people to enjoy the observation areas without barriers.
Visitor Experience
Observation areas are arranged to maximize views of the wetlands. This arrangement offers visitors opportunities to engage with the wildlife actively. The design emphasizes interaction with the natural landscape, aiming to enhance the overall visitor experience. The flow between the observation platforms and the environment nurtures a relationship that deepens appreciation for the area.
The structure features slender columns that support the upper observation platform. They allow for wide, open views while maintaining a minimalist appearance, making it fit within the sensitive wetland ecosystem.
