Volcanic Stone Facade With Cantilevered Roof Enhancing Community Gathering Space

Project in-detail

The pavilion's cantilevered roof, constructed from galvanized steel and complemented by a gabion stone facade, creates a dynamic space for film screenings and community events while harmonizing with Iceland's volcanic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
The facade incorporates locally sourced gabion stone, reflecting the region's geological characteristics.
02
A cantilevered roof design provides both shelter and an architectural focal point for the entrance.
03
Natural lighting is maximized through strategically placed skylights and glass walls.
04
The open-plan interior allows for flexible use of space for various community events.
05
Sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems are prioritized to minimize environmental impact.

The Iceland Movie Pavilion is a distinctive architectural project designed to serve as a cultural hub that integrates seamlessly into Iceland's unique volcanic landscape. The structure's design emphasizes fluidity and responsiveness to its environment, utilizing an organic form that reflects the geographical features of the region. This pavilion functions primarily as a venue for film screenings, exhibitions, and community events, fostering cultural engagement and enhancing visitor experiences.

The project showcases an innovative approach to architecture, emphasizing sustainability and contextual design. Materials were selected for their environmental compatibility and aesthetic resonance. The use of gabion stone, galvanized steel, reinforced concrete, wood, and polished concrete aligns with the local context, both visually and environmentally. The building’s exterior exhibits a sculptural quality, characterized by its dynamic shapes and textured surfaces that mimic the area's natural formations.

The interior of the pavilion features an open-plan layout, allowing for flexible use of space. High ceilings and glass walls facilitate natural light, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere while providing striking views of the surrounding landscape. The layout strategically incorporates areas designated for exhibitions, screenings, and gatherings to encourage community interaction and engagement.

The pavilion’s unique design approach lies in its integration with the natural environment. The building’s roof features an overhanging design that not only enhances its architectural aesthetics but also provides shelter and invites visitors into the space. The thoughtful arrangement of skylights and expansive glazing creates a dialogue between the interior and exterior, breaking down barriers and enhancing the sensory experience of visitors.

In addition to its architectural merit, the project prioritizes sustainable design principles. The use of locally sourced materials and the implementation of energy-efficient systems demonstrate a commitment to ecologically responsible construction. This emphasis on sustainability is especially pertinent in the context of Iceland's pristine environment, reinforcing the pavilion’s role as a culturally significant and environmentally conscious addition to the landscape.
