The Black Rock Guesthouse is situated in a remote area of Iceland, designed to provide an inviting space for travelers. The building follows a modern interpretation of traditional Icelandic architectural styles, particularly inspired by turf houses and longhouses with their distinctive elongated roofs. This approach creates a low-rise structure that works well with the surrounding landscape, ensuring it feels like part of the environment.

Design Concept

The layout of the guesthouse consists of two wings that contain the guestrooms, which are connected by a central area that includes the living room, kitchen, and dining space. This design allows for privacy in the guest rooms while creating opportunities for social interaction. Each guestroom is oriented to take advantage of specific views of the landscape, enhancing the connection between interior spaces and the natural scenery outside.

Spatial Experience

Upon entering the guesthouse, visitors are led through a hallway that offers framed views of the mountains in the distance. This entryway sets a calm tone and prepares guests for the experience that awaits them. The living room acts as the main gathering space, featuring large windows that provide expansive views of the surroundings. Natural light fills the room, creating an atmosphere that feels bright and open, allowing guests to feel connected to the beauty outside.

Materiality

The choice of materials in the guesthouse is straightforward and effective, focusing on creating a calming environment. Wood is used for both the walls and ceilings, adding warmth and a natural touch to the spaces. Volcanic rock, sourced locally, contributes to the building's strength while also serving as a natural barrier against the local weather. The use of bronze anodized aluminum for the window frames introduces a modern element that contrasts nicely with the rugged volcanic rock.

Detailing

Amenities designed for wellness, such as a sauna and an outdoor hot tub, are cleverly positioned to encourage guests to connect with the surrounding landscape. Located at the end of the corridor, the hot tub offers protection from prevailing winds while still providing impressive views of the mountains. Through thoughtful detailing and design, the guesthouse creates a space that balances comfort with an appreciation for the nature that envelops it.
