Untreated Wood Structures Elevated Over Tranquil Lakeshores

Project in-detail

Elevated on pillars to minimize land impact, the design incorporates untreated wood for a natural aesthetic while offering a serene environment for wellness and relaxation by the lake.
5 key facts about this project
01
Pillar foundation minimizes ground impact, allowing the building to float over the lakeshore.
02
Oriented huts provide varying levels of privacy while maximizing lake views.
03
Large skylights enhance natural lighting, creating a warm interior atmosphere.
04
Untreated wood cladding will weather to a silver-gray, blending with the surrounding forest.
05
Rainwater harvesting supports self-sufficiency, reducing resource consumption.

The Blue Clay Country Spa is an inviting retreat located in the green forests of Kurzeme. It is designed to promote well-being by connecting visitors with nature. The layout takes shape as a linear village along the lakeshore, allowing people to enjoy both the calming views of the water and the surrounding landscape. The design concept aims to create a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Spatial Organization

The layout of the spa is carefully planned. It begins with shared spaces, such as a dining room and common area, and moves towards more private sections, including therapy rooms and a sauna. This arrangement balances community and solitude, giving guests options depending on their preferences. Each area is positioned to take advantage of views of the landscape, strengthening the link between indoor and outdoor experiences.

Materiality and Sustainability

Local untreated wood is used for the roof and walls, reflecting a commitment to sustainable building practices. This choice of material is significant as it connects the structure to the local environment. Over time, the wood will weather to a silver-gray color, blending it into the forest surroundings. Such a material choice shows an awareness of ecological design, using resources that are meaningful to the local culture.

Relationship with Nature

Large windows and skylights are placed thoughtfully throughout the spa. They allow natural light to enter and offer views of the lake and trees. This design not only creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere but also encourages guests to engage with the beauty outside. The buildings are elevated on pillars, reducing their impact on the ground and giving them a floating appearance above the lakeshore.

Resource Efficiency

The spa includes solar panels that supply electricity and heat, along with a system to collect rainwater for use in showers and toilets. This strategy underscores the focus on resource efficiency and sustainability, making the facility self-sufficient. The attention to these systems enhances the overall usability of the spa while remaining committed to ecological principles.

Natural light streams through the windows, while the untreated wood enhances the connection to the surrounding forest. These simple yet effective design details invite people to experience the space with a sense of calm and presence, appreciating the natural beauty around them.
