Transparent Cubes in Steel Framework Enhanced by Geothermal Landscape Interaction

Project in-detail

A series of transparent glass cubes interconnected by a robust steel framework defines the structure, harmonizing with the volcanic landscape to create an observation space focused on environmental engagement and community interaction.
5 key facts about this project
01
A modular design allows for flexibility in adaptation to the site's volcanic terrain.
02
Interactive observation cabins provide educational tools to enhance the visitor experience.
03
The structure employs repurposed building materials, minimizing environmental impact.
04
A unique combination of glass and steel creates a seamless visual connection with the landscape.
05
Strategically positioned glass cubes optimize natural light while offering panoramic views.
Hrafn Tower is an architectural project located in Iceland, designed to facilitate observation and interaction with the surrounding natural landscape. The structure is composed of a series of glass volumes interconnected within a steel framework, enhancing its integration with the volcanic terrain. This project serves not only as an observation point but also as a space for educational engagement and community interaction.

The design incorporates five levels of varying functional spaces. The ground and first floors provide essential amenities and community services, creating an open atmosphere. The upper levels are dedicated to observation, featuring cabins equipped with binoculars and digital systems to enhance visitor engagement with the landscape. This design encourages exploration and interaction, allowing users to experience the environment from different perspectives.

Integrating Transparency and Structure

Hrafn Tower differentiates itself from conventional observation structures through its unique use of form and material. The transparent glass panels create a seamless visual connection with the environment, while the modular cube design responds to natural topography and enhances the building's relationship with the landscape. The use of steel in the framework provides structural integrity while allowing for expansive glass surfaces that facilitate natural light and views.

The interactive components incorporated into the observation cabins act as an educational tool, providing visitors with contextual information about the geological features visible from the tower. By leveraging modern technology, Hrafn Tower promotes a deeper understanding of the local landscape while enriching the visitor experience.

Innovative Use of Materials and Sustainability

The project's material palette includes steel, glass, reinforced concrete, polystyrene panels, and wood. Each material serves a specific purpose, contributing to the overall functionality and sustainability of the structure. The glass facade maximizes natural light, creating a dynamic internal environment, while the use of polystyrene panels in insulation enhances energy efficiency.

Hrafn Tower also emphasizes sustainable architectural practices by incorporating repurposed materials and minimizing ecological disruption. The design’s modular approach allows for flexibility in construction and adaptability to potential environmental changes, which reflects a progressive mindset in architectural design.

To gain a thorough understanding of Hrafn Tower and its architectural significance, readers are encouraged to explore the project presentation, which includes architectural plans, sections, designs, and other key details that highlight its unique design approach and functionality.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
