Skyvertex is an architectural project that exemplifies a balance between modern design and environmental context, situated in a remote area known for its captivating natural phenomena, particularly the Northern Lights. The project serves as a multi-functional living and communal space, combining private and public areas to encourage both solitude and social interaction among its inhabitants. The overall design harmonizes with its landscape, providing a framework that enhances the occupants' experience while paying homage to the surrounding environment.

Unique Structural Elements and Design Approaches

Skyvertex features a primary structure characterized by its long, linear form, which is divided into sections for various functionalities. The residential quarters are designed for comfort and privacy, while the communal space, rising to a height of 7.5 meters, accommodates gatherings and events. This duality allows for a shared community experience, fostering connections among residents.

Furthermore, the design integrates semi-translucent satellite units that resemble individual pods. These satellite structures offer private spaces with optimal views of the night sky, thereby enhancing the connection between the architecture and the celestial phenomena. The architectural approach stands out by prioritizing visibility and interaction with the Northern Lights, a defining aspect of its geographic location.

Material Selection and Sustainability Strategies

The selection of materials is deliberate and reflects both functionality and sustainability. Glulam (glulam laminated timber) is utilized for its strength and thermal properties, while PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) is employed for its lightweight and weather-resistant characteristics. ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) is used for inflatable mattresses within the design, contributing to the lightweight structure while maintaining visibility.

These materials not only support the durability and stability of the building but also enhance its energy efficiency. The project employs passive solar design principles, maximizing sunlight during winter months while providing shade during summer. Furthermore, it incorporates advanced water management systems, including rainwater collection and greywater recycling, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable architecture.

Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility. 

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design.
