Translucent Plexiglass Envelope and Volcanic Stone Integration in a Community-Centered Educational Hub

Project in-detail

A translucent plexiglass envelope constructed in a hexagonal configuration harmonizes with volcanic stone to create an educational hub that fosters community engagement and awareness of Iceland's geological heritage.
5 key facts about this project
01
A hexagonal module system enhances structural integrity while mimicking natural lava flow patterns.
02
The exterior combines a durable stainless steel membrane with a satin-finish plexiglass for natural light diffusion.
03
Local volcanic stone is incorporated to connect the building to its geological context.
04
Design features include adaptable interior spaces for a variety of educational activities and community events.
05
Pathways in the landscape emulate natural geological formations, enhancing visitor experience and engagement.
The Crater is an architectural project inspired by the volcanic landscapes of Iceland. Designed to function as an educational and recreational hub, it stands as a tribute to the geological heritage of the region. The structure embodies a large crater form, integrating smoothly into the surrounding terrain, while emphasizing sustainability through the use of local materials. This project is characterized by its innovative design and the way it achieves harmony with the natural environment.

Unique Structural Approach
The structural design employs a self-supporting envelope made from stainless steel and satin-finish plexiglass, forming an intricate surface that mimics the natural contours of volcanic formations. This method allows for extensive open spaces without the need for intrusive internal supports. The use of hexagonal modules in the façade not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also improves structural efficiency. This design approach permits ample natural light to penetrate the interior, fostering a vibrant atmosphere that reduces reliance on artificial lighting.

Distinctive Material Choices
One of the project's key features is its material composition. The exterior is primarily clad in stainless steel, ensuring durability against the harsh environmental conditions typical of Iceland. Additionally, the incorporation of local stone serves to root the building firmly in its geographical context, aligning architectural choices with ecological principles. These materials reflect a commitment to sustainability and a desire to create a dialogue between architecture and landscape. The project also emphasizes adaptability with flexible interior spaces that can accommodate a variety of uses, encouraging community engagement and interaction.

Engagement with the Landscape
The surrounding landscape design enhances the overall experience of the project. Pathways designed to mimic lava flow patterns guide visitors through the site, creating an immersive connection to the geological features that inspired the building's design. Spaces for gatherings and relaxing areas are thoughtfully integrated into the site, promoting social interaction and communal learning. This focus on environmental integration positions The Crater not just as a building but as a landmark that invites exploration and education, promoting awareness of the natural wonders of Iceland.
