The design introduces a modular accommodation system located in Iceland, influenced by the former narrow gauge railway that once operated in Reykjavík's harbor. This concept focuses on mobility, allowing guests to easily reposition their temporary homes according to their preferences. The overall aim is to enhance the experience of the surrounding nature, particularly the captivating display of the northern lights, while providing a functional and comfortable stay.

Concept and Functionality

The project features a flexible track system, which allows the modular homes to be relocated without difficulty. This design aspect is key in letting guests find ideal spots for enjoying the northern lights, thus strengthening their connection with the landscape. Each module is designed to accommodate two to four guests, equipped with essential amenities that foster a comfortable living environment.

Architectural Layout

Modules are designed with practical use in mind. Each ground floor includes a terrace, a dining area, and a kitchenette, along with a bathroom. The upper floor presents sleeping areas with beds located beneath skylights, facilitating unobstructed views of the night sky. This two-level structure not only serves everyday needs but also creates an inviting atmosphere that complements the natural surroundings.

Community Engagement

A central communal area serves as a gathering place for guests, functioning much like a living room. This space encompasses a kitchen and a dining area that can host up to 20 people, along with a reception office and a lounge area centered around a fireplace. The design smartly balances spaces for social interaction with areas that offer privacy, catering to the diverse needs of visitors while encouraging community connections.

Sustainability and Materiality

The design incorporates a combination of a metal frame and an insulated timber frame clad in wood. These materials are chosen to withstand the harsh Icelandic climate while supporting sustainable building practices. A battery system is included to provide electrical power, reducing dependency on external sources. Additionally, the layout features accessible installations for water management, enhancing the overall efficiency of the modules.
