03
Pillars are pre-cut for efficient assembly and minimal impact.
04
The design encourages direct interaction with the surrounding nature.
05
Positioned at a junction to connect existing pathways seamlessly.

The DOUBLE SPIRAL RAMP is located in KEMERI NATIONAL PARK, known for its wide-open landscapes. The design allows visitors to explore the natural setting while providing easy access for everyone, including those with mobility challenges. The project focuses on creating a pathway that encourages interaction with the environment rather than just a place to observe from a distance.

Structural Composition

The ramp's structure relies on a thoughtful selection of materials and engineering methods. Key features include pre-cut timber louvers and pillars, which serve both practical and visual purposes. The timber louvers make up the main part of the ramp, designed to allow varying degrees of light and visibility. This feature adjusts based on the time of day and the seasons, helping the ramp blend into its surroundings.

Accessibility Features

The design includes a double spiral configuration, which plays a crucial role in how people move through the space. This arrangement allows for a one-way flow of traffic, helping prevent congestion. It is particularly beneficial for wheelchair users and individuals with other mobility needs. The focus on accessibility ensures that all visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the park, making the experience inclusive for everyone.

Integration with Natural Landscape

Located at a key point between existing boardwalks, the DOUBLE SPIRAL RAMP merges naturally with the landscape. By allowing visitors to traverse through the space, it encourages them to interact directly with the environment. The flow of the ramp connects users to the natural world around them, creating a pathway that feels open and inviting.

Aesthetic Consideration

The ramp features pre-cut 60/120 mm timber pillars that support the structure while maintaining a visually light appearance. Additional 60/60 mm pine pillars enhance this delicate balance. These design elements ensure that the ramp does not overwhelm the natural landscape. Instead, it harmonizes with the park’s beauty, offering a comfortable space for exploration.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
