Thermal Mass and Fruit Gardens in an Eco-Friendly Retreat

Project in-detail

Constructed with locally sourced stone and complemented by a circular fruit garden, the eco-friendly retreat emphasizes thermal mass to create a serene spa and guesthouse experience that integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed within a hill to minimize environmental impact.
02
Features a thick stone wall on the North side for heat retention.
03
Incorporates a fruit garden to enhance local biodiversity.
04
Offers extensive openings on the South side for optimal sunlight.
05
Utilizes a geothermal heat pump for energy-efficient heating.

The eco-friendly spa and guesthouse, "By The Trees," is set on a hill near a tranquil pond, designed to coexist with the natural surroundings. The project focuses on energy efficiency and encourages interaction between the building and its environment. Its pavilion-like shape is characterized by a simple rectangular form, with open facades that allow plenty of sunlight and provide expansive views of the forest.

Design Concept

The design promotes a connection between the built space and its natural context. A circular open area surrounded by trees helps establish a scale that fosters community while creating a peaceful environment. This thoughtfully arranged space encourages interaction among users and allows for relaxing moments in nature.

Orientation and Functionality

Orientation is thoughtfully planned in the design. The North side features a solid facade made of thick stone, which helps reduce heat loss. In contrast, the South side has large openings that invite natural light and frame views of the pond and forest. This contrast not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also supports the building’s energy efficiency.

Materiality

Material choices are informed by the local context and practical needs. Locally sourced stone is used for its ability to absorb heat during the day and release it at night, contributing to temperature regulation within the structure. Wood for the exterior cladding and decking reinforces a connection to the landscape. Concrete tiles are chosen for the roof to ensure durability and ease of maintenance.

The design incorporates two terraces that curve around the pond, inviting users to experience the water and nearby vegetation. This attention to detail reflects a desire to create inviting spaces that connect users with their natural surroundings.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
